Publishing and Licenses
You can create and distribute free or commercial games with a licensed copy of Polygon Engine. You retain the rights you hold in your original game content, and the engine license does not charge royalties on those games. These permissions cover Polygon Engine's runtime, not third-party firmware or content. Read the EULA included with your installed release for the applicable terms.
Include the game notices
After Build > Build Disc Image (.bin + .cue), the package includes a LICENSES folder
beside the BIN/CUE/ISO files. The same notices are also stored inside the disc
image, so they remain present when the image is copied or burned.
| File | What it covers |
|---|---|
LICENSES/LUA.TXT | The full Lua license and copyright notice. |
LICENSES/PSN00B.TXT | The complete PSn00bSDK license bundle and component notices. |
LICENSES/POLYGON.TXT | Permission to distribute Polygon Engine's compiled runtime as part of your game. |
LICENSES/NOTICE.TXT | Runtime attribution, versions, and links to the corresponding Lua and SDK source. |
Keep this folder with downloads of your game, including a standalone executable if you distribute one. Retain the embedded notices for physical discs and make them accessible to recipients, for example through a manual or download page. Add the licenses and credits required by your own fonts, music, models, textures and other third-party content. The generated folder covers the engine's runtime; it cannot establish rights to assets you add yourself.
If the editor reports a missing or unreadable license file, repair the engine installation and rebuild. Do not publish a package with incomplete notices.
Your game and the SDK
PSn00bSDK's MPL-covered code remains under MPL-2.0. Recipients must be able to obtain its corresponding source; the generated notices link to the exact unmodified SDK revision used by this release. This does not require you to publish your original game code simply because the runtime uses that SDK. Third-party rights remain in effect even when your game has a proprietary license.
Lua uses the MIT license; retain its full copyright and permission notice. For the original terms, see the Mozilla MPL FAQ and Lua license.
The compiled Polygon Engine runtime may accompany your game. The editor, proprietary runtime source and engine package may not be redistributed as a standalone product. Separate terms apply to the tutorial downloads linked below.
Startup branding
Exported games must retain the four-second Polygon Engine splash. It appears before the first scene, with a fade in and fade out, and cannot be disabled in project settings or Lua. Describe this requirement to collaborators before choosing the engine. See Startup Splash.
Platform compatibility and Sony material
Polygon Engine is independently developed by Novemtails. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or licensed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. PlayStation is a trademark of Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc.
The engine does not include or download a Sony BIOS, Sony SDK, Sony disc boot data or confidential Sony documentation. It does not import Sony boot data into game exports. Configure any lawful firmware required by an emulator in that emulator, and do not include it in your game downloads. Owning a console does not automatically grant redistribution rights to its firmware.
Describe your game as an independent homebrew title compatible with the original PlayStation where accurate. Do not use Sony logos or claims of official licensing without the necessary permission. A disclaimer alone does not authorize use of someone else's material or branding. For Sony's own identification of its marks, see its copyright and trademark notice.
Building successfully does not guarantee booting on an unmodified retail console. Use lawful deployment methods and validate your advertised targets. PS1 Ready is a content-budget check, not approval from Sony or proof of hardware compatibility.
Tutorial resources
The downloadable Two-Room Relay project, script, image and sound have their own tutorial license. You may use and adapt them in free or commercial games under those terms. This does not license the engine itself or grant rights to Sony material. The supplied badge may appear as part of a game, but does not imply endorsement.
Before publishing
Check the exact build you plan to distribute, retain its notices, verify rights to all added content, and describe tested platforms and known limitations honestly. For commercial plans involving platform material, branding or console deployment, obtain legal advice for your jurisdiction and intended markets. This guide explains the product's permissions and workflow; it is not a legal clearance.
